Important Seedstock announcements!

Jun 16, 2012

Dear friends of Seedstock and community currencies,

We are reaching out to you all on this rainy Vancouver evening with two important announcements:

1. Only a day left on our Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign!

As of right this moment, there are only 30 hours left to go on our Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign (www.indiegogo.com/seedstock)!

Thanks to the many people who have helped bootstrap this project so far by buying their Seedstock in advance! If you've been meaning to do so as well but haven't got around to it yet, now is the time! If you already have bought your Seedstock, or aren't able to at this time, you can still help bring us closer to our target by sharing the campaign widely on Facebook, Twitter, or by emailing your friends! Simply go to www.indiegogo.com/seedstock and click on the sharing icons found on the campaign page!

Here are some of the reasons that people are buying Seedstock now to help this project get off to the best possible start:

"It’s not so unusual to run out of someone else’s currency, so best to make it your own." - Rand

"I love what you are doing – thank you for your commitment and passion!" - Tracy

"This is a great initiative and I’m proud to be part of the initiating community" - Ann

"Thank you for being brave and starting this much needed local currency! BRAVO! I will be contributing $60 a month to Seedstock!!" - Mimsy

"A great idea whose time has come." - Edward

"This is the most important indigogo campaign I have ever funded. What this can spawn if successful is an entirely new paradigm of exchange based on the most important aspect of our global society- food. Anyone who cares about sustainable food and new money systems, fund this NOW" - Imran

"It is different people who make a difference. Lives, from here on in, will be abundantly changed!" - Sindie

"Thank god for young people who care about the city they live in" - Ruth

"I’m putting my money where my mouth is! This is bigger idea than actually presented in the video. If you are upset about the financial crisis, the banksters, and more, this is the way to take a stand and to refuse participation in their pyramid scheme of debt-created money and slavery to the banks. Sustainability is impossible when there is a debt to the money you use everyday!" - Melissa

"This is a brilliant project and I’m so excited to see it in action!" - Robyn

"It’s great to see this project coming to life and growing deeper roots in the community. The Seedstock project has already brought together an amazing network of people and I’m looking forward to seeing what will happen once it launches!" - Shelby

"Amazing idea! Just what Vancouver needs :)" - Jocelynn

"Looking forward to celebrating community with Seedstock local currency!" - Lisa

"The first step is always the scariest but the opportunity to take that step is a privilege." - John

2. Calling all artists and graphic designers!

In 1984, the artist J.S.G. Boggs doodled some art on a napkin in a Chicago bar. The waitress liked his doodle, and asked Boggs if he would pay his 90 cent bill with the art instead of with cash. Boggs agreed, and in doing so, crossed an interesting threshold between money and art. He has since spent over $250,000 of his own self-created “art money”!

In 2011, the Dutch artist Dadera, exasperated by the absurdity of the global financial system, began making his own art money, and even his own art bank - Exchanghibition Bank - where people could buy art money to spend on art and performances.

Now, in 2012, Seedstock would like to invite the artists and graphic designers of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland to join the next phase of the art money revolution - by helping to design Seedstock, a living currency that will not only look pretty, but have a significant positive impact on our local economy as well!

In late July, we will be holding an Art as Money, Money as Art show where all contributions from artists will be on display, and some of them will be selected to decorate one side of each Seedstock denomination! We think that this show will be a great opportunity to showcase the rich artistic talent that exists in our city, and to ensure that Vancouver's first community currency reflects that richness. By celebrating the place where art and money intersect, we can also explore some very important questions such as how we value money, how we value art, and how money is used to put a price on art.

Calling all currency iconoclasts!

More details about the Art as Money, Money as Art show will be coming soon! The deadline for submissions is July 15th, but if you are interested in making a submission please let us know as soon as possible by sending us a note to seedstock@agorabora.ca. This will help us ensure that that you receive all the important information and updates you need, and will help us immensely in planning the show!

Please spread the word to any and all friends and acquaintences in the art and graphic design communities! We'd love for them to be a part of this!

More details will be made available on our website at http://seedstock.ca/art-as-money
